The Go Givers 3rd Law – The Law of Influence
This is the third part of my five-part series on The Laws of Stratospheric Success of the inspirational book, Go Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann. The Go Givers third law is The Law of Influence in which it states, “Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first”.
Let’s have a quick review of the first two laws; The Law of Value tells us to give more in value than what we accept in payment and yet still prosper. This is in understanding with the difference between price and value. Price is the financial value while value is the high regarded worth to the consumer. The second law, The Law of Compensation imparts that the more people we provide exceptional value to, the more monetary reward we receive. In the third law, The Law of Influence, it actually shows us how to be practical; to give and serve abundantly and put other people’s interests above our own. It is in this act you will see that people will do business to someone they know, like and actually trust. There is no faster, effective and powerful way to do this but by finding ways to place other person’s interests first. That is what the Law of Influence is trying to teach us, to build a relationship based on respect, commitment, loyalty and trust. To earn influence, show value to receive the warranted respect, trust and loyalty. Nevertheless, remember to do this out of free will, with a committed passion, for it would mean losing a part of ourselves. See to it that our own self-value is realized at the same time we are serving others.
The Law of Influence shows us how to be a giver. Being a giver doesn’t mean giving out everything for free. A giver comprehends that it is not common for someone to give without expecting anything in return. It is a natural human reaction and perception that to give is to receive something back. However, the Law of Influence wants us to practice giving and providing more value than what we expect to receive. A “true” giver wants to learn what an individual truly needs and finds ways to fulfill that need to the best of his ability. It could come in the form of listening or offering advice and solutions to particular problems, uplifting rather than criticizing.
We all give and take though some of us are out of balance. A few people give too much but resent it because they lack the passion to do so. A few people take most of the time and yet do not quite understand the reason why they are still not getting ahead. The remaining others learn to live in balance. The important thing is to determine if you want to be a giver or a taker. It is up to you to put that balance in your life. The Law of Influence in the beginning may show you that in establishing a relationship, you may end up giving a lot more than actually receiving but this is only temporary. As you infuse commitment into giving others needs, you may not immediately see the results of your growing influence, but it’s there, right where you planted it. Be patient, stand firm in being a giver, and help build the success of others and see the rewards return to you in a thousand fold.
The Go Givers book has distinct important ideas, but the point of the Law of Influence is to run your business with a servant’s will and heart. To go out of your way to ensure the success of everyone you know or may not know yet; to spread out information and be engaged to everyone else’s activities. If you can structure your business so that you can give as much as possible to affiliates and investors or to work on how not to keep most money or opportunity for yourself rather give more regard to the people who might need it most.
