The Boys and I Enjoy A Day In New York City and The International Auto Show
A Day In New York City and The International Auto Show
This all came about, with the fact that I owed my son “lil Joe” a visit to the International auto show in New York City. Ever since my love for hot wheels as a child, I have always loved cars. So car shows have always been a part of my life. Even as a teen, living in the Bronx, I would go to the car show every year, but in those days the International car show was in the New York Coliseum. I guess that was the convention center in New York City in those days.
Needless to say, I guess the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. So Lil Joe is just like his dad and loves cars. You see last year, for some reason or another Joey couldn’t make the trip with me. So I brought “Flaco” with me.
Who’s Flaco? Well Flaco is my son in law. His name really isn’t Flaco, his real name is Efrian, his mother and everybody else calls him Chippy. I call him Flaco. Flaco is the Spanish word for a skinny male. He’s tall, skinny and he was dating my daughter “TinyaMarie” when she was 14 and he was 16. Something that I didn’t know about until she was 16 and he was 18 and I didn’t approve of it at that time. So let’s just put it this way; Flaco is one of the better names that he’s been called by me.
However, Flaco is now 25 and I can honestly say that he has grown up to be a fine young man and a wonderful father to my grandson Jayen. And I take back all of those “not so wonderful” things I use to call him.
Now let’s get back to our adventure. Lil Joe see’s that the International Auto Show is in town and of course Joey reminds me that last year he didn’t go and that I promised to take him this year. Me being a man of my word, I tell him to pick a day. You see Lil Joe isn’t so little anymore actually he’s taller than I am, he’s 21 years old. But he’s still my little baby boy and he always will be. So he decides on Friday and he come up with the bright Idea; Dad, why don’t we take Jayden? He loves cars. Now let me remind you that Jayden is only 19 months old, so I have to ask my daughter. She thinks it’s a great idea and so does Flaco, however Flaco thinks that it’s an even better Idea if he comes with us. Come on, what dad is going to let his son go to his first International Auto Show without him?
Okay now it’s decided, Joey, Flaco, Jayden and Grandpa “Me” are going to hop on the Long Island rail road and attend the New York International Auto Show on Friday. So on Friday morning we have a great big breakfast at the local I-hop before we board the train at 9:00 am. It was Jayden’s first time on a train and just looking out the window just wasn’t enough for him he also had to see and meet all of the people on the train. So he did, with grandpa not too far behind.
We arrived at Penn station and we walked to the Jacob Javits convention center where the International Auto Show is hosted every year. The very first car that we looked at was a $26,000,000 1965 Shelby Cobra. I couldn’t believe it, the seats were all ripped up and who knows what else was wrong with it. For that price? You gotta be kidding me.
Then came the electric cars and it just opened up all of the newest cars, concept cars and even a car that turned into an airplane. The car that impressed me the most, was the Audi A-8. What a car, and let me tell you that, I am not an Audi fan. My dream car is the Maserati GranTurismo and that Audi had me thinking. However, I’ve driven the Maserati and not the Audi. I did find the interior of the Audi much nicer. But the truth is that I wasn’t going to drive away in either one that day. So when the time comes, that’s when I’ll decide.
We lost the thrill of the International Auto Show in about 3 hours and after Flaco spent $12 on a pretzel and a drink we decided that maybe we should go somewhere else for lunch. So we walked up-town a bit and we had a wonderful lunch at a Spanish restaurant that I was familiar with and that was a home run, the whole gang loved it and the owners fell in love with us all for under $25. I couldn’t believe it, the one lady put together a plate of rice, beans and chicken for Flaco. I say to the lady; wait a minute you shouldn’t give this guy all of the food, he’s not going to eat it. She responds; wait until he taste it and watch. That lady was absolutely right, Flaco ate everything but the bones, actually we all did.
Next, we walked off that delicious lunch in Central Park, well actually I ran. You see I put my grandson Jayden down on one end of the park and he didn’t stop running until we got to the other side. However, that little trip through Central Park was the highlight of my day as it was for Jayden, the Park is so beautiful and action packed, with music, acrobats and many different kinds of artist. The playgrounds, playing fields and the walk ways all full of life, fun and excitement. The park was absolutely beautiful and this is coming from a person who has probably played on every rock within that park. And now as an adult I think that I can enjoy as much or even more today. Next time I’ll enjoy the whole day as I do plan on going back with my wife and both of my grandchildren.
Now, it’s time to head back home, Jaden jumps in his stroller and falls to sleep, we walk down 5th avenue back down to Penn Station for the ride home. The bottom line is, this is what it’s all about. I work very hard towards achieving my goals but the truth is that my family is my goal. Us all getting together having good times, enjoying fun and beautiful place together is what it’s all about for this online home business entrepreneur, because before I’m a home business entrepreneur I’m a husband, father, son, grandson, grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend and I thank God for all of that.
